Bandwidth / Infrastructure Upgrades: Update

To: Faculty, Staff & Administrators
From: Emmanuel Ajanma, Dir. Of Technology | eajanbsu@u61.net
Date: February 11, 2019

As we approach the middle of February, and some long-awaited work on our wireless
infrastructure, I wanted to provide you with this update on our efforts to upgrade and
increase the amount of bandwidth available at our schools and central office.

Many of you have expressed not only an interest in, but also the importance of, being able
to connect your personal wireless devices (phones, tablets, etc.) to the BSU wireless
system, for the purposes of aiding in instruction, coaching, or communicating better with
students, families, and colleagues.

We are pleased to report that work will begin this month on replacing our aging cable lines
with high-speed fiber-optic cable, capable of transmitting data significantly faster and
clearer than is currently available to us. We are also re-negotiating our contracts with our
Internet service provider to increase our bandwidth from 300 mbps to 1 gbps, effective July
1. (Due to Federal restrictions and reimbursement guidelines, we are unable to alter our
existing contracts until their expiration on June 30, 2019).

Once our infrastructure work is complete and our new contracts are in place, we will be in
a position to provide high-speed wireless access to BSU faculty, staff, and administration
for use on all personal devices, for school or BSU-related business. (Our Acceptable Use
Policies will still apply).

We very much appreciate your patience as we make these needed and long overdue
upgrades, and we ask that, in the meantime, you do not request an exception to our
current policy of limiting BSU wireless to school or BSU-issued computers and
Chromebooks.

If you have questions about our current policy, or other Internet or wireless-related issues,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
